Wharewhiti has notched his third career win, running his best-ever mile rate to claim victory on his Cranbourne home track.
The five-year-old gelding was eased near the back of the field as the leaders ran a blistering 25.8 sec first quarter.
Once the field settled, driver Chris Alford urged Wharewhiti around the field, ready to strike as they turned for home.
In the straight, Wharewhiti took control and cruised to the finish post 3.6 metres ahead of his nearest rival.
His mile rate was an impressive 1.56.4, three seconds faster than his previous best.
The winning stake takes Wharewhiti’s career earnings to more than A$20,000, with three wins and six placings from his 20 raceday starts.
On the Australian tote, Wharewhiti paid $2.60 for the win and $1.30 for the place. In New Zealand, Marshall supporters earned $3.00 and $1.30 at the TAB.
