Kyle Marshall Racing team member Ricki Herbert has made a return to the racing sulky – 27 years after he last drove in a harness race.
The All Whites footballing legend has been passionate about harness racing since driving and co-training with his late father Clive in the 1990s when the pair prepared horses from their South Auckland stables.
Herbert (59) now lives in Cambridge where his football academy is based and continues his work in football with clubs Cambridge FC and Hamilton Wanderers.
But for relaxation away from the football pitch, Herbert has returned to the race track.
He is KMR’s business development manager, helping Kyle Marshall and his staff strive to reach the high professional standards Herbert instilled in his football teams.
He’s also been enjoying working KMR horses at the track and in workouts.
“I love sitting in the sulky. It’s always given me a thrill,” he said.
Herbert made his return to race day driving at Cambridge Raceway on December 3, 2020, when he drove Chalberg (which he part-owns) for trainer Luke Whittaker (main photo).
He proudly wore the white, blue and yellow colours which his father had sported during his training days.
